A tough afternoon on the water saw Jono add just 2.37km to the Swim4TheOcean total yesterday (Monday, 23 February), battling stubborn current off the east coast on the North Island, to the south of East Cape.
On Sunday, 22 February, Jono completed one long swim from 11:11am to 5:10pm – a six-hour push tracking south from the last marked GPS point, just beyond East Cape Lighthouse, past the Waiapu River mouth and down towards Port Awanui.
East Cape Lighthouse is now behind them marking another significant milestone in Jono Ridler’s unprecedented endurance swim from North Cape to Wellington.
Two swims yesterday (Thursday, 19 February) carried Jono from a remote bay at the eastern tip of East Cape, around the corner and south toward Hicks Bay and Te Araroa.

One long swim added close to 20km to the live tracker, taking Jono Ridler’s Swim4TheOcean total to 722.76km.
Swim4TheOcean is officially halfway to Wellington – more than 700km complete – but as the milestone ticks over, one of the most complex logistical stretches of the mission is now underway around East Cape.
As Jono swims toward Wellington calling for an end to bottom trawling, New Zealand has proposed raising allowable coral bycatch limits at SPRFMO. We’ve joined other organisations in urging the Prime Minister to withdraw the proposal and uphold New Zealand’s commitment to ocean protection.
Open water marathon swimmer Jono Ridler has hit the halfway mark of Swim4TheOcean – his world-record swim attempt from North Cape to Wellington with a call to end bottom trawling.
Swim4TheOcean is now within 5km of halfway. As shown on the live tracker at the end of Sunday, 15 February, Jono Ridler has now covered 688.89km – up from 661.60km at the start of the day.
