Our impact reports give us the opportunity to report to you, the people who support us and make our work possible, on our important achievements with partners. But our story goes way beyond what we can capture in short reports. We partner with exceptional marine scientists, innovators and communicators to scale up action for a healthy ocean. Take a look below at how we are working with these important changemakers to restore and protect the ocean and the life in it.

Reflecting on the financial year from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025, the report celebrates the collective impact we’ve made together across science, innovation and outreach. None of this would be possible without you, and our incredible whānau of partners, supporters and community.
Inside, you’ll find stories of our impact in action — the people and projects setting a new pace for ocean health in Aotearoa. Take a look inside.
Inside the report you’ll read stories about innovative new tech addressing a prickly problem and powering up citizen science across the country, insights into regrowing kelp forests and its potential exciting role in valuing blue carbon alongside a raft of other impactful ocean projects. This year the community of ocean champions around us has strengthened and widened too, with swimmers, paddlers, sailors and ocean lovers leaning in to raise critical awareness about the health of the ocean.
This is the year Live Ocean stepped onto the world stage with confidence. With a strong presence at the UN Ocean Conference and using the global platform of sailing, through the New Zealand SailGP team and the launch of Live Ocean Racing, we took the message of a healthy ocean for a healthy future to large audiences. This alignment with both science and sport is a vital part of how Live Ocean works to drive change.
Our second annual report reflects a huge amount of support, belief and mahi. For a young organisation we’ve made significant strides, entering our third year with our strategy tested and embedded.
In this report, you will find exciting progress updates on the Antipodean albatross and southern right whale research as well as a growing number of project partnerships including innovative new tech changing the way people view what’s hidden beneath the surface. You will also see the impact the power of sport has had in bringing these local issues into the global spotlight.
This is Live Ocean’s first annual report which sets out the foundation’s impact, achieved through the magnificent support we’ve received.
Our first full financial year saw the COVID 19 pandemic hit but despite the uncertainties, it was a year of steady growth with exceptional highlights – including the support of excellent research into key species like the Antipodean albatross and the southern right whale; the growth of the team and the registration of Live Ocean in the US as a charity with tax deductibility.
In order to drive positive change, we rely on the generosity of fellow ocean lovers.
Thanks to a small group of generous Live Ocean supporters who cover our operating costs, we can proudly say 100% of your donation will go directly marine conservation projects we support.
We’re on a mission to create 1,000 postcards to protect the Hauraki Gulf and we need your help.
Send us your favourite ocean photo and a few words about what you love most about the Gulf, and together, we’ll spotlight why the Gulf deserves urgent protection – for us, and for future generations.
