Live Ocean Foundation has joined a growing list of organisations calling for better focus on ocean-based research and solutions during the upcoming COP29 climate talks in Baku Azerbaijan.

The declaration, signed by many international NGO’s, research institutions and corporates, calls upon all countries, organisations and private-sector actors to make robust, long-term investments in ocean observations, research and mapping.

The ocean is our greatest ally in the fight for a healthy planet. It’s a powerful carbon sink and offers significant mitigation and adaptation solutions to keep the crucial Paris 1.5°C transition target within reach.

Only by investing more in ocean research and solutions will it be possible to predict better short- and long-term climate trends, protect global biodiversity and safeguard freshwater supplies.

The declaration calls on countries, organisations and private sector actors to:

  • Expand international collaboration
  • Enhance public and private funding to scale-up and diversify support of long-term ocean observation, research and innovation
  • Build capacity of scientists, researchers, communities and policymakers
  • Improve access to technology and data, including indigenous and traditional knowledge
  • Improve awareness of the ocean’s role in planetary systems

The COP29 Baku Ocean Declaration is led by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and Scripps Institution of Oceanography/University of California San Diego, with signatories including the Ocean & Climate Platform, Office of the Pacific Ocean Commissioner, Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, Fugro, Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation and the American Geophysical Union.
