This article will provide you with a run down on what UNOC is and why it’s important.
Our founders Peter Burling and Blair Tuke are attending the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) being held in Nice, France from 9-13 June.
The pair have been invited to take part and speak at multiple events within the UNOC line-up including an ‘Ocean House Nightcap’ which brought together athletes and changemakers who are turning sporting influence into ocean impact, and a session on ‘The Power of Sport as a Key Convenor’ being hosted by The Ocean Race. They’ll also attend a mural painting event showcasing the vital importance and ecological significance of seamounts hosted by the Deep Sea Conservation Coalition.
Wondering what the UNOC is all about? Here’s all your questions answered…
UNOC gathers the who’s who of the climate, ocean and policy communities including governments, policy makers, international NGO’s, celebrities and Heads of State. There’s many events and side events, allowing people to share ideas, experiences, perspectives and knowledge across borders. This is UNOC3 – only the third ever held. UNOC2 was hosted in Lisbon in 2022.
The overarching theme of this conference is “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean”.
UNOC25 falls at the midway point in the Ocean Decade. This is a critical opportunity to talk about how the world can accelerate and scale up science and innovation to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
Sustainable Development Goals were set-up in 2015 by the United Nations. There are 17 interlinked global goals which are designed to be a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. This UNOC is focussed on SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
Countries will use this opportunity to make policy commitments and announcements. The decisions and agreements made across the week will determine how the world moves forward in the fight against climate change.
Live Ocean will be represented at UNOC3 by founders Peter Burling and Blair Tuke who have been invited to speak at and attend a number of UNOC3 events.
